Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
New Year's Celebration

Comments - Terrific depiction of a raucous New Year's celebration, with people gathered around a low table piled with food and drink, including a platter with a large fish on it. At lower right, a beauty plays the shamisen as the two men beside her play a hand game called ken. At lower right, a tray holds a kagami mochi or mirror rice cake adorned with a lobster and greenery. The kagami mochi is used as a holiday decoration, then broken open and eaten in a traditional Shinto rite in January. Barrels of sake are stacked behind it. Small figures with kanji characters in place of faces dance about the room, waving fans. A charming design with a wealth of interesting detail.
