Series; Fifty Kyogen Plays (Kyogen gojuban)

Fifty Kyogen Plays - Published in 1927, "Fifty Kyogen Plays" (Kyogen gojuban) features prints designed by Kogyo and his daughter, Tsukioka Gyokusei. These images depict kyogen plays, a traditional form of Japanese comic theater, often performed during the intermissions of Noh plays. Actors use exaggerated actions and dialogue, along with slapstick and satire in their roles. Kogyo began the series, designing 16 prints, and his daughter completed the series shortly after his death in 1927, contributing 34 subjects. Like her father, Gyokusei specialized in Noh theater subjects. An interesting and rarely seen series by father and daughter artists.
