Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
New Year's Decoration Calendar Print, 1893

Ryaku-reki - Popular during the Meiji and Taisho eras, "ryaku-reki" are single page, abbreviated calendars. Most feature auspicious imagery to bring good fortune throughout the year, such as objects associated with the Seven Lucky Gods, treasures, cranes, and pines. Some include the animal of the zodiac for that year, while others depict figures or objects from daily life. These attractive designs feature the calendar inset against a vibrant red background framed by a vignette. Many include silver or gold mica accents or metallic pigment. An interesting genre of Japanese woodblocks.

Special detail - Printed in English at lower left " D. Haibara/No. 1 Tori Itchome Nihonbashi-ku,/Tokyo, Japan."

Artist - Meiji era artist (not read)

Image Size - 8 1/4" x 10 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two vertical folds from original use. Some prints have slight soiling, a few creases, or light ink transfer from folded storage. Please see photos for details. Generally in nice condition overall.
