Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the play commonly known as "Kagimiyama," a tale about the junior lady-in-waiting Onoe, who has been shamed after the evil Iwafuji substituted a sandal for a valuable statue under Onoe's care. Here, Onoe has sent her loyal maid, Ohatsu, to mail a letter for her. Caught in a fight between two rogues, the lacquer box containing the letter falls open, and Ohatsu discovers the sandal along with a suicide note. She clutches the sandal in her outstretched hand as she tumbles over the back of one of the men, who holds the lid of the box in his hand. The rogue at left has a hold of the cord tying the box closed, and he leans forward with an angry frown. Crows fly overhead, a bad omen. A lively scene with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
