Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Distraught Beauty

Figures from History and Legend - Interesting design from a series of postcard-sized prints depicting figures from history and legend. Subjects range from single and double portraits of beauties, commoners, and noblemen, to action scenes of men fighting off attackers. A couple mythological subjects include a tengu and a tiny demon appearing in flames. Some prints depict examples of honor and virtue, such as the poor man Tsuneyo chopping up his bonsai tree for firewood to be able to serve a meal to a monk who showed up at his home unexpectedly, and the thrifty Aoto Fujitsuna having his men looks for coins lost in a river, which would otherwise be lost forever and of no benefit to anyone. The majority of prints are by Yoshiiku, with a couple by different artists. These handsome designs are beautifully detailed and printed. An intriguing group.
