Beauty with a Letter, 1879

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a group gathered around a beauty holding a letter. She displays the message with one hand as she looks accusingly over her shoulder at the man at right, who scowls back at her, his brows furrowed. The woman at right grins happily, seemingly unaware of any conflict. In the center, another fellow takes a toothpick from his mouth as he listens, while the man at left frowns angrily. He wears a black kimono with a beautiful burnished geometric pattern, and his hair is pulled back into a topknot while his male companions' hair is cropped short in the latest Meiji fashion. A red tie-dyed textile pattern creates a graphic background for the figures. A handsome design, detailed with additional burnishing on the black kimono collars.
