Sawamura Tanosuke as the Wife Okaru and Bando Hikosaburo as Hayano Kampei, 1862

Comments - Interesting scene from the tale of the 47 ronin of the ronin Hayano Kampei and his wife Okaru in an interior. Ashamed of his failure to save his master, Lord Hangan, from quarreling with Moronao, Kampei elopes with his sweetheart. Here, Kampei looks at the beauty with a sullen frown, his arms folded across his chest and tucked into his sleeves. She smiles back at him as she kneels with a blue and white cloth in one hand. Woodblock prints decorate a low folding screen, with Kampei's swords on the floor nearby. The home is shabby with missing plaster on the wall at upper left. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke and Bando Hikosaburo. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting.
