Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Courtesan Katsuragi and Nagoya Sanza, 1861

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene featuring Sawamura Tanosuke as Katsuragi and Kawarzaki Gonjuro as the samurai Nagoya Sanza. Sanza was banished from his clan after a valuable scroll in his possession was stolen, and his wife Iwahashi was forced to sell herself to a brothel, becoming the courtesan Katsuragi. Here, the beauty smiles sweetly as she looks down at her husband, who regards her with an angry frown. He sits on a cushion, resting his hands on a slender pipe, a tobacco set on the floor nearby. An enormous wooden tub hangs over his head, suspended by a heavy rope. The curtains in the doorway are delicately shaded from pale blue to golden yellow, with a white pattern of rabbits. An intriguing subject with a nicely detailed interior setting.
