Minamoto no Yoshitsune and the Fox Gentoku, 1881

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura," a drama about Minamoto no Yoshitsune. In the center, the fox Gentoku has taken the form of Yoshitsune's loyal retainer Sato Tadanobu. He grimaces angrily at the warrior monk at left, who stares back at him steadily as he grips a pole arm with both hands. At right, Yoshitsune scowls as he watches the pair, while the beauty beside him grins happily, seemingly unaware of any conflict. The black lacquer railing of a verandah can be seen at top left, with blossoming cherry branches framing the red sky. A lively image with vibrant color, detailed with faint embossing on the white kimono and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the beauty's hair ornament.
