Courtesan and Man Reading a Book, 1883

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene of a courtesan frowning angrily as she looks suspiciously out of the corners of her eyes at her companion. He stares back at her with a frown, a pipe in one hand and a book in the other. Behind them, a blue kimono decorated with a crane in flight, plum blossoms, and pine sprigs hangs from an elegant rack. The beauty at left watches with a sweet smile as she sits beside a lacquer mirror atop a makeup chest. A simulated black lacquer frame borders the figures. Nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono collar, and burnishing on the frame and the lacquer items.
