The Courtesan Kiyo, 1880 by Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Courtesan Kiyo, 1880

Series; Eastern Pictures of Heroic Women Compared

The Courtesan Kiyo, 1880 - Terrific portrait of the courtesan Kiyo kneeling beside a lamp. She looks over her shoulder with a haughty expression, her chin tilted up defiantly, her hands tucked inside the sleeves of her lavender kimono. Her red under robe is detailed with an intricate tie-dyed pattern, with an olive green dotted collar., tied with a blue tie-dyed obi. A wonderfully expressive figure with fine line work in the hair. This is a rarely seen Yoshitoshi beauty series, and the first time we've offered this design.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 13 3/8" x 9" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at edges from previous mounting. Small tear and loss at edge, slight thinning at edges, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing. Please see photos for details.
