Onoe, Ohatsu, and Iwafuji, 1874 - Great kabuki triptych depicting two scenes based on the tale of the senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji, who plotted the downfall of her junior, Onoe, by substituting a sandal for a valuable state in Onoe's care. When the sandal was discovered, Iwafuji publicly beat and humiliated Onoe, leading the young woman to commit suicide. At left, Onoe's loyal servant, Ohatsu, attacks the evil Iwafuji to avenge her mistress's death. Iwafuji slashes at her with a sword as Ohatsu thrusts an umbrella while trying to grab her collar. Iwafuji wears a black kimono with a beautiful burnished geometric pattern. At right, before the suicide, Ohatsu hangs over the beauty's shoulders as she looks up. From left, the actors are Onoe Baiko, Nakamura Shikan, Onoe Kikugoro, and Bando Hikosaburo. A handsome design with lively figures and vibrant color.
