Monkey Trainer and Nobleman, 1860 - Interesting kabuki scene of a monkey trainer and his animal performing for a nobleman who accompanies them on a hand drum. At lower left, the trainer looks up with a worried frown as the monkey dances about wearing a tie-dyed robe and carrying a wand of folded bundles of paper used for Shinto purification rites. At far left, a man with a shamisen pauses to tune the instrument while the nobleman stares at him with an angry frown. At right, a messenger kneels beside a beauty, tilting his head and pointing to his cheek with a strange expression. In the room behind them, a flute, a shamisen, and a koto rest against a rack. An intriguing image with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
