Yosaburo and Otomi Meeting, 1860

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene depicting the first meeting of Izuya Yosaburo, the dissolute son of a merchant, and Otomi, a former geisha who is now the mistress of the gang boss Akama. The pair fall in love instantly after seeing each other at the beach, and begin a secret affair. Here, Otomi looks over her shoulder at Yosaburo with a grin, her mouth slightly agape. In the center, Yosaburo looks back at her with a sober expression, holding his striped kimono sleeve to his chest. At right, Yosaburo's friend reacts with alarm, knowing the danger the pair will face from the gang boss should they continue to meet. He holds out Yosaburo's coat for him, urging him to leave. A floral cloth is tied around his shoulders with an umbrella tucked through it. Waves lap at the beach, which is dotted with seashells, and boats can be seen in the water. A handsome design with an attractive natural setting.
