Scene from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, 1874

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the historical tale "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," a story about the three leaders Chohi, Kwanu, and Gentoku, meeting to take an oath of brotherhood and swear to serve each other and the state rather than continue fighting amongst themselves. At left, Chohi scowls angrily as he looks up at Kwanu, who glares back at him as he strokes his beard. He wears a green robe with a pattern of a dragon, and a print cloth headdress topped with a medallion and small horns. Gentoku watches suspiciously from the right. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro, Nakamura Shikan, and Bando Hikosaburo. A text panel with softly shaded blue clouds runs across the top. A bold image with large colorful figures.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 28 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small loss at corner, a few wormholes, slight thinning at edges, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing, slight paper remnants at side. Please see photos for details.
