Attacking a Beauty by Moonlight and Matron with a Package, 1879

Comments - Interesting triptych depicting two kabuki scenes, divided by a wavy diagonal line. At left, a commoner raises a short sword high above his head as he prepares to stab a beauty, who recoils in fear, throwing her hand out in a stopping gesture. A full moon rendered in metallic pigment that has oxidized to a darker tone glows in the night sky. At right, a matron holds a small paper package to a beauty who leans forward eagerly to take it. A red tie-dyed textile pattern creates a bold background for the pair. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono collars.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 1/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. A few holes, repaired. Slight soiling and wrinkling, diagonal crease in right panel. Please see photos for details.
