Scene from the Storehouse of Loyal Retainers, 1884 - Unusual kabuki scene from the "Storehouse of Loyal Retainers" (Kanadehon Chushingura) featuring some of the minor characters in the play. At left, the samurai Yozaemon stands outside a garden gate in the falling snow, frowning as he listens to the conversation taking place inside the home. In the center, Agakaki Genzo thrusts his chin out defiantly as he looks up at the matron Osami, a bottle in one hand. The beauty stares back at him intently, while the young Yonosuke watches him as well. Red lacquer boxes and a stack of books rest on shelves behind the figures. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro, Onoe Kikugoro, Bando Shucho, and Nakamura Fukusuke. Nice large colorful figures, detailed with burnishing on Osami's black kimono and Genzo's black collar.
