Series; The Yamato Newspaper Supplements

The Yamato Newspaper Supplements - Interesting woodblock from a series of supplements to the daily Yamato Newspaper (Yamato shimbun) around 1885 - 1889. These chuban format scenes are by a variety of artists, including Yoshitoshi and Toshikata, done as covers for short novels or stories, which were sometimes published in multiple parts. Subjects range from samurai and beauties to modern couples and daily activities. This intriguing series is quite rare and would make a great popular culture addition to a Meiji era collection.

The Yamato Newspaper Supplements - Terrific image from a series that Yoshitoshi did as supplements to the daily Yamato Newspaper (Yamato shinbun) around 1885 - 1889. Yoshitoshi did illustrations of popular figures of the day for the Yamato Newspaper, similar to his work for the Postal News a decade earlier, but more restrained and in the smaller chuban format. He created portraits of men and women from the Meiji era, some of them heroes captured in quiet moments, and others hinting at tragedy and violence, each with a decorative border and text panel. This intriguing series is quite rare. These woodblocks would make a fantastic addition to any Yoshitoshi collection.
