Eastern Genji and the Autumn Moon at Fukagawa, 1856

Comments - Handsome scene from the popular "Tale of Genji" of the young prince arriving by boat for a moon viewing party. He stands in a boat at left, smiling up at the beauties relaxing on the verandah of a palace. One leans against the railing at right, a tiny cup of sake in hand, smiling as she looks out over the water. Another woman reclines on the floor, her chin propped on her hand. A pipe and porcelain dishes of food are scattered about the floor, with a large offering tray at right piled high with mochi cakes next to an arrangement of autumn flowers. A cloud drifts across the glowing full moon and lanterns hang overhead. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. An attractive design with wonderful detail in the setting.
