Hikaru Genji: Arranging Flowers, 1863

Comments - Attractive scene of Prince Hikaru Genji and beauties arranging flowers in an elegant interior. At lower right, the nobleman grins as he looks up, a stem covered with yellow flowers in his hand. The beauty behind him folds a vase filled with irises. The standing woman in the center gestures with her finger as she chats with Genji, while a matron kneeling beside her places a blossoming cherry branch in a container. In the room at upper left, a variety of flower arrangements are displayed on stands. The room opens onto a view of a lake and garden dotting with flowering cherry trees. Includes a faint burnished pattern on Genji's light yellow kimono. A lovely image and a nice subject for a collector interested in ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging.
