Scene from Shukyo Kagami Jishi, 1893

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych of the actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX performing as the lion dancer, accompanied by his two daughters Fukiko and Sayako as butterflies. He wears the traditional flowing white wig and holds peony branches, while the girls play hand drums strapped around their necks, and wear butterfly wings attached to their backs. They appeared in the performance called "Shukyo Kagami Jishi" in March 1893 at the Kabukiza Theater in Tokyo. Wonderful detail in this charming design, with embossing on the white wig and the girls' white pants, and accents of metallic pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone. A great choice for a kabuki collector.
