The Shogun Starting from Nijo Castle Gate, Kyoto, 1889

Comments - Handsome scene of one the Shogun's procession leaving Nijo Castle in Kyoto during the Tokugawa Shogunate. The Shogun rides in a handsome cart drawn by black oxen, his face partially hidden behind the fringed trim of the carriage top. Noblemen in formal court attire walk alongside him, with a long line of followers crossing over the bridge from the castle at left. A striking design with beautiful color and detail, including burnishing on the cart, the oxen, the black robes, and the black court caps. Only the second time we've seen this Meiji era subject.

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28" + margins as shown
