Seal Caught by the Ainu People, 1872 - This interesting print is from an illustrated book about the Ainu people of the island of Ezo. In 1869, the Meiji government annexed Ezo from the Ainu, its indigenous inhabitants, and renamed it Hokkaido. The book depicts the Ainu in their daily activities and livelihoods. The Ainu hunted seals for both meat and skins. This scene shows a seal that the Ainu have caught, with an incision along the top of the belly and the entrails removed. A rare historic record of these ancient people.
