Great Battle from the Taiheiki, 1860

Comments - Terrific image of samurai attacking an enemy camp from the historic epic "The Taiheiki," which detailed the warring period between the Northern and Southern courts. In the center, Imagawa Yoshimoto grabs hold of a spear thrust at him by an attacker while raising his sword above his head, his eyes bulging with rage. At upper left, a warrior flies though the air, hitting a large fringed standard. At right, a warrior emerges from beneath a cloth panel with his weapon raised. A dramatic design with expressive figures and fine detail in the armor and weapons.
