Suketakaya Takasuke as Nagoya Sanza and Ichikawa Danjuro as Fuwa Banzaemon

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait featuring Suketakaya Takasuke at left as Nagoya Sanza and Ichikawa Danjuro as Fuwa Banzaemon. The enemies accidentally meet one night when their scabbards brush when walking through the Yoshiwara. Sanza grimaces angrily as he holds his cased sword between his hand. The enraged Banzaemon bites his lower lip as he prepares to draw his sword. The figures are set against a red background with cherry blossoms overhead and a simulated black lacquer frame. An interesting format, nicely detailed with burnishing on the scabbard and the black areas of Banzaemon's kimono, and embossing on his white kimono collar and the cords wrapped around both topknots.

Artist - Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 1/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. A few small holes, repaired. Vertical wrinkles, creasing, slight soiling. Please see photos for details.
