Imperial Minister Kibi, No. 38 - Sent to study in China in the 717, Kibi no Makibi became imperial advisor to Empress Koken after his return many years later. He introduced many Chinese customs and arts to the Japanese court. Here, he watches over two women embroidering a beautiful design. The inset above shows him watching the moon rise in the east, something that always made him homesick while in China. Lovely detail in the elegant fabrics, and fine expressive faces. A charming print.
