Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauty with Flaming Drum

Series; One Hundred Ghost Stories

Beauty with Flaming Drum - Terrific kabuki design of a beauty next to a large drum surrounded by red and orange flames. She wears a striking black and red kimono with a bold floral print, her loose hair flowing over her shoulders as she grips the cord of a horned demon mask called "hannya" between her teeth. In Noh theater, the hannya mask represents a woman who had been transformed by jealousy or anger into a demon or monster. A great composition with her upraised sleeve and several flames crossing over into the decorative border, adding a sense of liveliness to the design. A fantastic image.
