Moon, 1849

Series; Snow, Moon, and Flowers

Moon, 1849 - Handsome print depicting Prince Genji paying a visit to a beauty. He smiles as he looks up over his shoulder, admiring the full moon in the night sky. He wears a light gray coat lined in black over a blue kimono, his hair neatly tied back in a topknot. At right, a beauty kneels near the doorway to a room where a household shrine atop a black lacquer chest is adorned with grapes, a bird figurine, and offerings of food. At left, a woman holds a tray ornately decorated to resemble a small hut along the shore, stacked with graduated red lacquer sake cups. She looks back as another attendant climbs the stairs, only the edge of her offering tray visible. A lovely design with wonderful detail in the elegant setting. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
