Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of the yakko or servant Kanpei from the play commonly known as "Kuzunoha," a tale about a magic fox who takes the form of the beauty Kuzunoha to marry the samurai who saved her from a hunter. Here, Kanpei looks forward with a dumbfounded expression, one hand flung out at his side. His kimono is tucked up, revealing a loincloth trimmed with fringe, and he carries his master's two swords over his shoulder. Behind him, a stone fence encloses a garden with a blossoming cherry tree and a stone lantern. An expressive figure.
