Seki Sanjuro III as Odera Shobei, 1859

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of Seki Sanjuro III as Odera Shobei in the play "Kosode Soga Azami no Ironui." Shobei had broken into the shogun's treasury and stolen a huge amount of gold coins. Here, he scowls angrily as he holds out a package of money in one hand, a box filled with cash at his side. He wears a brown coat over an intricately patterned gray and brown kimono, and has a black cloth wrapped around his head. An expressive figure in a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Backed with paper. Small losses at edge, repaired. Toning, soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
