Sericulture - Handsome design from Chikashige's 1879 series "Sericulture" depicting upper-class beauties involved in raising silkworms to produce silk. Subjects include feeding the silkworms mulberry leaves, plucking and boiling the cocoons to release the silk thread, and weaving cloth. The women wear white kimono with an embossed geometric pattern tucked into full red pants, sleeves tied out of the way with sashes. These attractive designs are nicely detailed and vibrantly colored. An interesting look at the art of sericulture.
