A Chronicle of the War in Kagoshima: The Main Camp at Kawajiri, 1877

Comments - Interesting depiction of the rebels' main camp near the mouth of the Kawajiri River in Kumamoto during the Satsuma Rebellion. Alarm spreads as a messenger at left arrives with news of an attack, the samurai behind him fleeing from explosions. In the center, the rebel leader, Saigo Takamori, quickly mounts his horse, reaching back with one hand to take his hat from another rebel. At right, several warriors spring into action beneath a purple drapery bearing the Satsuma clan crest, gesturing towards the fighting, one tying a white sash around his head to keep his hair out of the way. Just below, samurai dressed in elegant robes looks back over his shoulder, the pieces from a hurriedly abandoned game of go scattered about the floor. A lively scene, nicely detailed.
