The Thirteenth of the Line - Lord Iesada (Onkyo-in) - Terrific illustration of Tokugawa Iesada, the thirteenth shogun, at Fukiage Garden watching a sumo match between Koyanagi Jokichi and Arauma Daigoro. He sits on a platform at right surrounded by his retainers as the two wrestlers grapple in the ring. At right, the referee darts behind them men, watching them carefully, his fan in hand. Other wrestlers wait for their own matches at left, with additional samurai and noblemen sitting on the grass behind a low railing. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono of the seated judge at left. A great subject showing Iesada enjoying the ancient sport of sumo. A beautiful, clean crisp print.
