Series; A Modern Journey to the West

A Modern Journey to the West - Published from 1864 - 1865, Yoshitoshi's series "A Modern Journey to the West" illustrates episodes from the epic Chinese novel "Journey to the West," which tells the story of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang on a pilgrimage to India to obtain sacred texts. During his quest he is assisted by several animal disciples, including Son Goku, the Monkey King, and Cho Hakkei, called Pigsy, and three disciples. Along the way, they have many adventures and encounter many demons. Drawn with wonderful detail and bold compositions, these lively and imaginative designs bring the story to life.
