Comments - Handsome scene of the Meiji Emperor and Empress and ladies of the court visiting Itsukushima in Aki Province aboard a magnificent royal boat. The island is the home of Itsukushima Shrine, commonly known as Miyajima. The empress sits in the cabin at right, holding a fan, while her husband sits across from her at a cloth covered table with a vase of peonies. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black lacquer canopy and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the fan.
