The Sleeping Dragon Plum Tree at Kameido, 1893

Comments - Lovely triptych of visitors strolling about the gardens at Kameido Tenjin Shrine in early spring. At left, a beauty prepares to tie a poem slip on the famous Sleeping Dragon Plum tree, smiling as she looks over her shoulder. Beside her, a young girl plays with a dog, making it sit up and beg for a mochi cake in her hand. In the center, another girl squeezes between two women walking along, the beauty at right pulling up the edge of her Western style shawl trimmed with fringe. At right, a beauty accompanies a man wearing a kimono and a top hat, while visitors behind them climb the steep Drum Bridge to the temple. The ancient tree is covered with blossoms and buds. A beautiful design with wonderful detail in the clothing and outdoor setting, including burnishing on the black coat at right. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
