Comments - Interesting triptych featuring two scenes from a kabuki play. At left, the samurai Saburobei looks up with an angry grimace as he holds an enormous red lacquer cup of sake with both hands. A diagonal separates the figure from the scene at right, where the Minamoto warrior Okabe Rokuyata rages at two women, waving his hat over his head. At bottom center, the wife Fukaya looks up with a slight smile as she leans forward, while the courtesan Sazanami behind her looks worried. A screen at right is decorated with peony blossoms, while panels lining the back of the room feature cherry blossoms. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji, Iwai Shijaku, Ichikawa Gonjuro, and Nakamura Shikan. Nice large expressive figures.
