Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Samurai and Beauties Kabuki Play Model Print, 1889

Comments - Interesting paper model print depicting a scene from a kabuki play featuring samurai, beauties, and small figures that seem to be attacking one of the warriors with wooden mallets. These entertaining 19th century prints were designed to be cut apart and formed into three-dimensional models. An inset cartouche provides an example of the finished scene once assembled. Using the scene as a guide, the model builder could cut out the different components of the scene from the prints and create the model. This print includes many figures, a small building, pine trees, and a row of musicians and chanters. It's rare to find uncut paper model panels. A fun item.
