Men with Masks, 1890 - Interesting kabuki scene of a group of men in a teahouse overlooking the water. The fellow at bottom center holds a mask of Okame, the goddess of mirth, as he looks suspiciously out of the corner of his eyes, a finger pointing at his cheek. At upper right, another man holds a mask of Hyottoko, a comic character with his mouth puckered to one side as he is traditionally shown blowing though a bamboo pipe on a fire. He man scratches his head in a puzzled manner. The man at upper left leans forward in an agitated manner, his hands thrown out before him. A blossoming plum tree frames the view above. Nice expressive figures, detailed with a burnished geometric pattern on the black kimono and burnishing on the black collars.
