The Fourth Month - Fantastic street scene from a series depicting the months of the year by Toyokuni I and Toyohiro. In the center, a fish vendor slices a large fish on a board places across his tubs of fish. A woman waits with a plate in her hand to take the fish, a kitchen behind her. At right, a servant carried a large metal tub, a boy playing about her feet with two small puppies. At left, a young boy wrestles with a larger dog, a small wooden tub tied over his shoulder with rope. A mother stands behind him with a baby on her back, a dish in her outstretched hand. A courtesan giggles into her sleeve as she watches the activities taking place, a dog chewing on a sandal behind her. Fantastic detail in the setting and furnishings.
Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.
