Comments - Fascinating woodblock print featuring instructions for the art of bonseki, creating miniature landscapes on black lacquer trays using white sand, pebbles, and small rocks. A popular activity for the aristocracy during the Edo era, upper class women used feathers, small brooms, sifters, and other tools to develop beautiful landscape designs. Tiny structures such as bridges or temples might also be added to the scene. These wonderful images provide a blueprint or guide for specific layouts, offering detailed suggestions for harmonious creations. Beautifully rendered in calligraphic lines with soft gradations of color, these prints provide a wonderful look at this ancient Japanese art form.
