Shirabyoshi Dancer, 1875 - Terrific kabuki design of a smiling young shirabyoshi dancer Osame under a willow tree. She holds a small hand drum in her outstretched hand, looking over her shoulder happily. She wears a tall yellow court cap tied under her chin with a purple cord, and a red and green kimono patterned with blossoms. At right, the samurai Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu watches her carefully, gripping a slender bamboo pole with both hands, while at left, the nobleman Tsunayoshi fingers a flute. The beauty is in love with Yoshiyasu, but he suggests that she become the concubine of Tsunayoshi in order to win favor for himself. Wonderful detail in these large, expressive figures. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Gonjuro, Iwai Hanshiro, and Ichikawa Danjuro. An attractive subject with lively color and faint embossing in the beauty's white kimono collar.
