Comments - Fantastic triptych showing the reception of the great Minamoto leader Yoshitsune and his men by Lord Fujiwara no Hidehira at his castle in Hiraidzumi, Mutsu Province. When Yoshitsune ran afoul of his brother Yoritomo, Hidehira provided Yoshitsune and his retainer Benkei, the warrior monk, with shelter. Unfortunately after Hidehira's death, his son allowed Yoritomo to surround the castle, resulting in Yoshitsune committing seppuku and Benkei dying while protecting the bridge leading to the castle. Here, the daimyo sits on a low platform at far right, the great palace stretching out around him. Yoshitsune's men bow in the center, with Benkei recognizable by the giant Buddhist wheel crest on his black robe. A terrific scene from the life of the famous Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
