Naoyuki Conquers the Old Badger at Fukashima's Mansion, 1866

Comments - Terrific scene inside Fukushima's mansion of the samurai Ban Naoyuki investigating the appearance of a magical badger accompanied by an array of demons. He sits on the floor, glaring angrily as he looks ahead at the supernatural creatures as they try to frighten him. At left, a ghastly priest extends his head up on his neck, which is covered with flames, his mouth open as he shouts. To the right of him, a gigantic woman with an extra set of eyes peers around the edge of a screen, leering at the warrior. An assortment of bizarre demons fills the background. A fantastic supernatural design and a rarely seen early Yoshitoshi triptych.
