From Fuji Arts' Winter Exhibition of Chikanobu
Night Attack of the Soga Brothers, 1881Night Attack of the Soga Brothers, 1881 - Fantastic kabuki triptych depicting the famous night attack of the Soga Brothers at the Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Soga Goro stands in the center, raising a sword high above his head, biting his lips as Suketsune's retainer Goromaru grabs him around the waist, a pale pink kimono falling to the ground behind him. At left, Soga Juro struggles with another samurai who comes up behind him gripping a naginata. Juro's lover, the beauty Shosho, holds a flaming torch at right, oddly still smiling as she watches. Terrific detail in the hairstyles and expressive faces. From left to right, the actors are Bando Kakitsu, Nakamura Sojuro, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Ichikawa Sadanji I, and Ichikawa Hanshiro VIII. A dramatic design.
