Series; Eighteen Honorable Men and Deeds
Kanjincho (The Subscription List), 1901 - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Kanjincho" (The Subscription List). When Yoshitsune and his men are stopped trying to sneak across the border disguised as yamabushi or mountain priests, they must think quickly to save themselves. When asked their business, Yoshtisune's loyal retainer Benkei pretends to read a list of subscribers to a temple fund. Here, he sits atop two palace guards, a third man falling to the ground before him. A nobleman blocks the stairs to a palace behind him, spreading his arms wide as he glares at the monk. An unusual interpretation of this classic subject, nicely detailed with delicate cloth embossing on the white sleeves.
