A Quiet Retreat at Mt. Kurikoma, 1883 - Terrific scene of the young Hideyoshi paying a visit disguised as a ronin to the powerful lord Takenaka Shigeharu at his retreat on Mt. Kurikoma. Shigeharu was a master strategist and Hideyoshi wanted him to join Oda Nobunaga's forces, but Shigeharu disliked Nobunaga intensely. Through careful persuasion, Hideyoshi was able to obtain the warrior's services, and he advised Nobunaga well for many years. Here, Hideyoshi earnestly entreats Shigeharu to reconsider his position as the samurai scowls at him from inside his mountaintop retreat. Shigeharu wears a brown dragonfly print vest over a black kimono beautifully detailed with a burnished pattern. Hideyoshi's dark blue green robe is also burnished. A great design from this fine series. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
