The Picture Book of Loyalty - Hokusai's 1834 series "The Picture Book of Loyalty" (Ehon Chukyo) depicts exemplars of loyalty based on Chinese Confucian models. The series features both Chinese and Japanese examples, from warriors in battle to quiet scenes inside palaces, along with an unusual head and shoulders portrait of Confucius looking over a text he has written. The architectural and landscape settings are carefully composed and detailed. "The Picture Book of Loyalty" is one of three books based on Chinese texts that Hokusai illustrated in 1834 - 1835.
