Comments - Handsome depiction of the first three shoguns of the Tokugawa dynasty along with their wives and attendants. At right, Ieyasu, the first shogun, appears dressed in a beautiful black robe with a subtle burnished pattern. Two young women kneel at his sides and a youthful sword bearer crouches behind him. In the center, the second shogun, Hidetada, sits on a cushion dressed in formal court robes patterned with the three hollyhock leaf crest of the Tokugawa Clan over full hakama pants and a tall black court cap. The beauty standing at left smiles down at him happily while the woman at right carries an offering tray with sweets topped with a pine sprig. The third shogun, Iemitsu, sits beside his wife at left, looking down with a sober expression. An elderly retainer kneels next to a standing screen with a painting of a fortress in the mountains on it. A nicely detailed subject, vibrantly colored and detailed with embossing in the white kimono trim and touches of additional burnishing.
