Series; Mirror of Famous Warriors

Minamoto no Yoshinaka and Tomoe Gozen, 1897 - Terrific double portrait of Minamoto no Yoshinaka and the woman warrior Tomoe gozen. According to legend, the beauty fought alongside Yoshinaka during the Battle of Awazu in which Yoshinaka was killed. Here, she ties a white sash around her waist, dressed in a suit of armor over red print pants and robe, and a black court cap, a sword at her side. Yoshinaka sits on a leopard skin, one hand atop a lacquer armrest and the other holding a fan. His helmet is topped with the paulownia crest of the Minamoto clan, which also appears on his breastplate. A great image of this woman warrior alongside the general she served.
